Are there other ways to stimulate the vagus nerve that are effective?

In the context of brain development and brain repair, the purpose of vagus nerve stimulation is to reduce inflammation within the nervous system. The brain’s natural repair and developmental mechanisms are re-activated by lowering inflammation, and the brain begins to recover.nnThe only known way to stimulate the vagus nerve and reduce inflammation is through mild electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve. Not any electrical stimulation will lower inflammation; the parameters for inflammatory control are very specific.nnOther methods of vagus nerve stimulation (vibration or ultrasound of the ear or neck, gagging the tongue, or chiropractic therapy) do not lower inflammation within the brain. I do not prescribe or perform any other non-electrical methods of vagus stimulation because other methods are less effective at keeping the healthy shift in microglia function. I don’t believe these other methods offer enough stimulation to make a major difference in inflammatory control or the inducement of neuroplasticity.
